I set out on the evening of November 4th to meet with Bob Yeates the last remaining person that signed up for the trip. Bob and I headed from his work to the airport to catch a red eye flight to Dallas so we could get the Mexico as early the next day as possible. When we got off the plane Saturday afternoon at the Cancun airport the rain started coming down hard. This is not what you want to see a day before your first planned bonefish adventure. As we head from the airport to our destination it hardly rained at all and we kept a positive attitude about the next day. Our attitude didn't help. When we woke in the morning it was pouring down so we decided not to go on the quid trip we had planned. Instead we took a drive south to check in with the next days guide and to do a little fishing from the beach between rain squalls. We got only a few small fish that I think were Jack's. On Monday we woke to a beautiful day. We headed to Pesca Maya for our first day of Bonefishing. Our guides name was Filipo and the lodge manager showed us an issue of Fish & Fly that Filipo had recently been in. The rain didn't completely go away as we regularly put on our rain jackets. It was a good first day for Bob as he landed 3 bones. I think some people have a gift for spotting fish. Bob starting seeing bones right away. It's not easy because all you're looking for are shadows. On day 2 went out with Wilbur another Pesca Maya guide. We told Wilbur that we'd like to get a grand slam that day. He sure worked hard in his effort to help us do it. We started by fishing for bones in the morning. After we'd caught our fare share, it was time for lunch and then off to hunting down some Permit. We found them twice but just couldn't get one to bite. We also went after some Tarpon but didn't get any good opportunities to hook up with one. Day 3 and we're off to a different lodge. This day it's going to be Boca Paila. We get there a little early and are served a big breakfast before we meet with our guide Eric. As we did every for the rest of the trip we told our guide early on that we wanted a grand slam. This morning we started by looking for Tarpon first. We did see some and did our best to cast to them but had no luck. We were fishing a mangrove canal that the Tarpon swim through. Although we didn't get any Tarpon we did catch a couple of ladyfish. We once again caught several bonefish. That evening we had our best opportunity to pick up a Permit. Unfortunately we go a little to close and spooked them. On day 4 we got to go out with Juan from Boca Paila. Juan is the same guide I had in January 06. Juan was great. He got us into Bonefish, a Tarpon, and chances at Baracuda, Snook, and Permit. More to come.
The next dates will be March 16 or 17 2007 through March 24, 2007. It looks like we've already got 2 people signed up so there are only 2 spots left.
